In this section, you will find information on:

  1. documents you need to submit yourself

  2. documents you need to have submitted to the College on your behalf

  3. translation requirements.

The College cannot waive requirements for any documents. If you submit your application and are unable to complete your registration, the College cannot refund fees.


Documents You Need to Submit

The following documents must be provided to the College as they apply to you to complete your application. Based on the information you provide, additional documents may be required.

  1. photocopy of proof of surname, middle name(s) and first name at birth, and date and place of birth (proof of identity)

  2. proof of change of name, if applicable

  3. photocopy of employment authorization, if you are not a Canadian citizen

  4. original signed Canadian criminal record check report less than six months old from the date the College receives it. Must include your full legal name (the same name as entered on your application form) and all full names you have ever used and must be substantiated by your proof of identity document(s).

  5. photocopy of teaching certificate(s) from all jurisdictions, outside Ontario, if applicable

  6. fee of $260 (for 2009).

Once you submit your application and pay your fees, you will be able to return to this site to track the progress of your application. You will be able to see a complete list of all of the documents required and whether or not they have been received.

You will also be told if any of your documents are unacceptable and will be provided with information to help you to obtain the correct documents.

All documents submitted to the College become the property of the College and will not be returned. Please make copies of documents before you submit them.

Once you have submitted your application and paid your fees, please allow approximately 10 business days after we receive a document for it to appear on the site.


Documents Submitted on Your Behalf

To complete your application, you must arrange for the following information to be sent directly to the College from the granting institution/organization.

Translation requirements

1. Official Teacher Education Degree Transcript

The College requires a final transcript indicating your teacher education degree has been granted/conferred. You may be able to order your transcript online through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. Alternately, check with the registrar's office at your faculty of education to determine the process for ordering your transcript. The transcript must bear the institution's seal, be signed by the registrar and be sent directly from the granting institution to the College.

2. Recommendation

To receive your teaching certificate, your faculty of education must also recommend that the College grant you a certificate of qualification. This recommendation will be sent automatically by your faculty to the College when you successfully complete your teacher education program. You are not required to arrange the submission of the recommendation to the College.

3. Official Postsecondary Degree Transcript(s)

The College requires a final transcript indicating your postsecondary degree had been granted/conferred. If you completed your degree at an Ontario university, you may be able to order your transcript online through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre.

Alternately, check with the registrar's office at the university where you completed your postsecondary degree to determine the process for ordering your transcript. The transcript must bear the institution's seal, be signed by the registrar and be sent directly from the granting institution to the College.

For applicants who received their postsecondary degrees outside North America, you must arrange to have your transcript(s) sent to the College along with a letter bearing the seal and signature of the institution's registrar from the granting institution verifying:

  • your name as it appears on your Ontario College of Teachers application
  • the hours of study completed for each course according to each term or year of study within your program and,
  • confirmation that your degree was conferred if you received a one-time issued degree scroll.

Transcripts issued to students and submitted in a sealed, unopened envelope are not acceptable and will not be returned.

4. Statement of Professional Standing (if applicable)

If you have been a teacher in another jurisdiction, the College requires a Statement of Professional Standing. This document must not be older than one year from the date the College receives it and must be received from each jurisdiction where you have been authorized to teach. They must be sent directly to the College and verify that your certificate has never been suspended, cancelled or revoked. This requirement applies even if you never taught in that jurisdiction.

The College's mandate is to protect the public interest, particularly the safety and security of children. The statement of professional standing is issued by the jurisdiction's teacher licensing authority and is a very important document that provides the College with a reference regarding your past professional practice. Translation Requirements

Please arrange to have an English or French covering letter, which includes your name and College application number, included with any foreign language documents.

When the College receives official documents from the granting institution, we will send copies to you. You must arrange for official translation. Once you have the copies translated, please submit the foreign language document along with the translated version. Original translations will be accepted only from:

  • the consulate, high commission or embassy to Canada of the country which issued the documents
  • a Canadian embassy, consulate, high commission in the country from which you emigrated
  • a translator who has received accreditation through a federal, provincial or municipal government in Canada*
  • a translator accredited by a professional association of translators in Canada.

To obtain the name of an accredited translator, contact the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) at 1-800-234-5030 or 613-241-2846 (e-mail: info@atio.on.ca; web site: www.atio.on.ca)

If the ATIO is unable to provide a translator for the language you require, you may contact COSTI-IIAS Immigrant Services at 416-658-1600, info@costi.org or www.costi.org to arrange for acceptable translation.

All acceptable translations must be accompanied by an original statement indicating:

  • the translation is accurate and authentic
  • the translator belongs to one of the categories listed above (identification number and/or seal, name, address and telephone number required)
  • printed name and signature of the translator.
